Fall was creeping into the air as we looked down the beautiful AuSable River out onto Lake Huron. Today we would move inland away from the big lake. We would start by following the AuSable and viewing the magnificent colors along its shore. All the roads in the area seemed to take us through the breathtaking color that the Huron Manistee National forest is so well know for this time of year. |

Working hand in hand with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and other partners, the Forest Service has changed the "lands that nobody wanted" to healthy forests again.
This is where today’s tour would begin at the Eagle Run Hiking Trail located about 2 miles east of Oscoda on River Road. River Road is considered one of the most beautiful and scenic roads in the nation and just a few years ago, was declared a National Scenic Byway.
The Eagle Run Pathway is in a remote setting that allows you to experience nature first hand.
We would be accompanied on this hike by Bob Hughes owner of Sharkeys Lakeside resort on Lake Huron and George Falkenhagen a retired high school biologist. George would be our personal nature guide on this trip. Lets get started. |

The Eagle's Nest Overlook is one of the most famous overlooks on the Huron National Forest. The Nest is just west of the visitor center and has been used by a pair of bald eagles since about 1985. Rare is the fall day that you do not see eagles soaring over Cooke Pond. The view into the nest is better if you remember to bring binoculars of at least six power. |

Paul Bunyan is a larger-than-life folk hero who embodies frontier vitality. He is a symbol of might, the willingness to work hard, and the resolve to overcome all obstacles. Paul Bunyan is part of the western tall tale literature, which often populates the landscape with beings of gigantic proportions. Paul Bunyan and his boon companion Babe the Blue Ox take mosquitos of tremendous proportions, rainstorms that last for months, and natural obstructions like rollways in their stride. He was popularized by newspapermen across the country in 1910 and has been a part of the American culture ever since.
Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox have so many tales to tell of their adventures that I will pick just one of my favorites. |

| A favorite destination for a day hike Reid Lake Foot Travel Area is located in the Huron National Forest, on highway M-72, 20 miles west of Harrisville and just north of Glennie. This three thousand acre, non motorized area contains a six-mile network of trails wrapped around its namesake lake. The Reid Lake area contains the best stand of hardwoods in the Harrisville Ranger District of the National Forest. In addition to the lake, hikers will find a very large beaver pond, many marshes and bogs, and an abundance of birds and wildlife |
